CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: The Nefarious Villains of Sherlock Holmes

Description: From Charles Augustus Milverton to the Napoleon of crime himself, Professor James Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes has faced some of the worst men (and women) in London. While the Sherlockian canon provides one or two tales of these villains, there must be many more which earned them their treacherous reputations. What foul deeds did Dr. Grimesby Roylott commit before unleashing his speckled band? How many people were poisoned by the notorious Culverton Smith? Which horrific acts earned Don Juan Murillo the title of The Tiger of San Pedro?

Tales of the Nefarious Villains of Sherlock Holmes is an anthology aimed to answer these and many other questions about Holmes's worst foes. Each story will unveil new insights into the thoughts and actions of the worst criminals in the Victorian era. Read more about these monstrous fiends and their evil acts if you dare!

Submission guideline: A 5,000 - 10,000 word story about a villain from the original Sherlock Holmes canon. The story may or may not be a mystery, and does not need to include Sherlock Holmes. It does need to make logical sense compared to the original Sherlock Holmes stories (i.e. no Professor Moriarty story in 1895). Also the villain must be nefarious, so no Irene Adler stories. Even though she could be considered a villain, she certainly wasn't nefarious.

Some villains to consider for your story:

  • Sir Hugo Baskerville
  • John Clay
  • Baron Gruner
  • Charles Augustus Milverton
  • Col. Sebastian Moran
  • Professor Moriarty
  • Don Murillo
  • Holy Peters
  • Dr. Grimesby Roylott
  • Culverton Smith
  • Jack Stapleton/ Rodger Baskerville
  • Mortimer Tregennis
  • John Woodley

That's just a start. There are far more villains in the canon for you to choose from!

Submission proposal: To make certain that we don't have stories that contradict each other, please send a proposal to thepapersofsherlockholmes@gmail.com with the headline "ATTN: VILLAINS PROPOSAL". The proposal should include:

1. The name of the villain you would like to use in your story

2. A brief synopsis of your story's plot

3. (If possible) the year or time period where your story takes place

Story Proposal deadline: May 15th 2021.

Once your proposal is approved, the final submission will be due on August 15th 2021.

Publication date: A Kickstarter campaign for the anthology will run in November with publication of the book in January, 2022.

Payment: Authors shall receive a payment of $100 OR $50 plus a percentage of the Kickstarter project profits (whichever amount is GREATER) and a paperback copy of the anthology.

Rights: Authors shall retain rights to their work. We only retain the rights to the story within the publication.
